The fundamental reason why criminals with money and muscle are able to dominate politics is because no political party has seriously pursued electoral reforms. In the absence of any checks and balances in the system, any and every petty criminal or mafia don finds it to be the most convenient route to the levers of power. If a court has taken cognisance of charges against a member of the House, he should be disqualified to contest election and if elected and then a court has taken cognisance, he should be unseated.
The government should make decriminalisation of politics, a national priority. There is a nexus of money and power in politics and the government and judiciary have to build safeguards against these.
